To potty train or not to potty train?

My little boy is only 14 months old, but I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that he is trying to tell me that he wants to use the toilet. There have been multiple occasions where he will try to get into the bathroom and proceed to take off his clean diaper simply to pee and poop on the floor. The first time he did this, I was in total shock. I had heard that it was common for children to do this, but when it starts happening with your own kid, it isn’t any less surprising. When it is time to change his diaper, I just tell him, “let’s go change your diaper” and he walks straight to his room where his changing table resides. The kid is a pretty smart cookie. I just wonder if I am thinking he is ready for his own potty before he really is.

This brings me to an amusing story that happened today while celebrating my grandmothers 80th birthday. My family went out to breakfast, when my brother and sister-in-law informed me that my son wreaked, which I often don’t even notice anymore. I checked his diaper and saw that he did indeed have a little turd deep within his pants, so I immediately got up to take him to the bathroom. My mother joined me because she assumed there wasn’t a baby changer in the bathroom. Her assumption was right. She held my boy, while I took his pants and diaper off, but he wasn’t quite done so he proceeded to poop over the bathroom trash can, and then decided to pee all over the floor and walls. My mom was able to hold him over the trash-can so that we could get most of that pee in the trash. My boy was crying, which is understandable, how humiliating would it be to be hovering over a Carrows trash-can while trying to excrete. The entire event felt alarmingly like an 80s movie starring Michael Keaton or Steve Gutenberg.

So back to my original question, is it time to start potty training? I feel like there are signs that he is interested. At the same time, there are many factors against it; he is still so young and I don’t want to rush him, he isn’t even using real words yet so how can he tell me what he really wants? With a little sister coming in January, won’t that just regress any progress he has made and ultimately screw up the entire learning experience? I am totally conflicted about it. Anyone has any ideas?
